The new owner of a Blackpool hotel that had a room compared to a ‘murder scene’ in a review has revealed the cause of the issue – as well as offer an insight into all the hard work to improve its conditions across the premises.

The New Oxford Hotel on Albert Road was given a damning review on TripAdvisor and Facebook in late October when a guest who stayed there cited a number of issues including out of date PAT (Portable appliance testing) and damp on the window ledges.

The reviewer, Vicky Ford, also said a mirror was held together with masking tape; there were threadbare carpets; binbags left in front of the fire escape; and food still on tables in the dining area at around midnight.

Vicky, 36, an administrator from Manchester also described red marks under the window ledge in her room which she said “looked liked what can only be described as a murder scene”.

Previous bad reviews had been left on TripAdvisor such as this one which stated: “This is not suitable accommodation for holiday makers, more like a hostel. On arrival there was no introduction or welcome from man at reception.

“Was asked for payment which was explained had been done via Booking.com. Made way up threadbare stairs and after a search we found the room which had no door number. The room was dark and claustrophobic facing onto a brick wall and littered flat roof below. The curtains and carpet were dirty, stained wallpaper, plastic bag hanging from drawer handle as bin, shabby furniture, no bedside cabinet/lamp, no tv, no kettle, faulty cistern, dirty pan seat, musty smell.

“Felt unsafe due to group of non-residents loitering at entrance and in the reception foyer. Decided we couldn’t stay even if it meant going home again. Explained to reception man the room the room was not expected standard and cistern was faulty. He offered up no solution or apology on handing over the key.

“Meanwhile another passing by resident agreed the hotel was a dump but he had no option, had to stay for the sake of not unsettling his child. Was already late afternoon and unable to find another room we made long journey home, exhausted! Booking.com made contact with hotel but unable to provide refund as we didn’t take photos.”

Now, new owner Paul took – who over in October of this year – has told LancsLive that although the hotel has had recent bad reviews, a new team are working hard to improve it.

He also revealed that the ‘murder scene’ stains were, he thinks, from a children’s ice lolly.

Paul states now that the broken mirror has been replaced, PAT testing is up-to-date and says the photos of the binbags in front of the fire escape are left out in the morning and alleges the food on the table at midnight was actually a starter.

He told LancsLive: “Now when guests come here they will see all new carpets, new beds, new bedding, rooms done and new bar.

“The room that Vicky stayed where she said she has a damp window ledge, that has now been replaced. The problem was she stayed is she didn’t report these issues to reception for us to log in the maintenance book.

“The doors on the shower are pull on pull off, that she said came off, have been sorted.

“We discovered that the ‘murder scene’ under the window sill was actually marks from a children’s ice lolly.

“It’s taken some time since we took over but we’re getting there and we’re still going through room by room. We’re updating constantly.

“We have also secured coach parties and we have also secured the casts for shows at the Winter Gardens Opera House.

“We have also got the Bradford Bulls Rugby League Team staying when they visit Blackpool annually and we have a big thing coming off at the moment for the hotel with Funnyboyz and making the big bar into an entertainment bar open to the public.”
