Six faces of paedophiles brought to justice after decades of evading justice

Lancashire paedophile Frederick Wilding was finally brought to justice this week after abusing his position looking after vulnerable children at a Preston children’s home in the 1970s.

The stooped old man standing in the dock finally faced the horrors of the abuse he made young girls endure; young girls he was supposed to be caring for at Harris Park children’s home.

It a story only too familiar to the courts – a frail looking pensioner hobbling into the courtroom to face the heinous crimes he committed as a younger man.

For years they have walked free while their victims have lived with the anguish and pain of what happened to them when they should have been protected.

Recent years have seen a rise in reports of historic sexual abuse after high profile cases such as Operation Yewtree resulted in a number of celebrity paedophiles being put behind bars.

Media reporting has given some victims the courage to come forward, after seeing justice served decades later.

The reasons for delays in reporting are many: some victims fear they will not be believed, others do not fully understand what happened to them and some simply try to block it out. Tragically, many victims are chosen because they are vulnerable – making it less likely they will report their abuser.

In each case the abuser has manipulated them for their own depraved sexual gratification.

Every victim deserves justice and we make no apology for naming and shaming the abusers who destroy lives, relationships and futures for their victims.

Lancashire Constabulary encourages anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “We would encourage anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse no matter how long ago or who the alleged perpetrator to come forward and report it to us confident in the knowledge we will investigate with professionalism and sensitivity.”

Reports can be made by calling 101, using Lancashire Police’s online reporting facility or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A Preston paedophile house father who raped and sexually abused three children at a historic Preston children’s home has been jailed for nine years.

Frederick Wilding, 80, targeted the extremely vulnerable girls while they were at Harris Park Children’s Home more than 40 years ago. Two girls were raped by Wilding, who looked after children in Holly House on the complex, and another was indecently assaulted.

All three girls were in their teens when they were subjected to Wilding’s “lustful” abuse, Preston Crown Court heard. They cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Wilding, of Windmill View, Wesham, was convicted of four counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault during the trial at Preston Crown Court.

Handing down a term of nine years imprisonment, Judge Medland QC said: “For about seven years you exercised your sexual lust on children in your care. They were not directly in your care in the sense that it was your wife who was the house parent but you lived there and you took advantage of the situation to enable you to sexually abuse in a very serious way these vulnerable girls.

“There is no remorse in this case to look at whatsoever. I tell you bluntly: if you had been a younger, fitter man the sentence would have been much longer.”

Wilding will be on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

A paedophile who ruined a woman’s life has been jailed more than 20 years after he groomed and abused her as a child.

Keith Barry Murphy, 73, was sentenced to nine years behind bars at Preston Crown Court on Monday (November 8).

Richard Howarth, prosecuting, told the court Murphy, of Cheddar Avenue, Blackpool, abused the child at two houses in the resort over a three years period in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The abuse started with kissing but progressed to sexual touching, Mr Howarth said.

Murphy denied the abuse but was convicted of 17 counts of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child following a trial in which the woman had to give evidence against him. He continued to protest his innocence during the proceedings but the jury found him unanimously guilty.

Karl Hindley, 56, sexually abused a youngster at a house in Skelmersdale and in his car for around five years.

Hindley is not pictured in this article as he attended his interview on a voluntary basis. As he was not arrested a mugshot was not taken by Lancashire Constabulary.

The depraved paedophile told the little girl not to tell anyone or he would go to prison. Recorder Richard Archer sentenced Hindley, now of St Mary’s Court, Ellesmere, Shropshire, to 13 and a half years, consisting of 162 months custody and a 12 month extended licence.

He said the offences were “extremely serious sexual offences” which had caused his victim “severe psychological harm.” Hindley will be on the sex offenders register for life.

The woman said: “As much as I am very relieved that this court case finishes today, the work isn’t done for me. I am going to have to start the healing process, which is going to be a long and emotional road.”

Timothy Read has been jailed for 17 years after sexually exploiting a child and getting her pregnant when she was just 12 years old.

Read showered the girl with lavish gifts and paid for her when they went out together before having sex with her in his car.

Preston Crown Court heard the predator, now 39, was in his early 20s when he “brainwashed” the girl into believing they were in a genuine relationship.

Read, of Turton Street, Golborne, will be on the sex offenders register for life and barred from working with vulnerable children and adults.

Judge Robert Altham also made an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.

A former Scout leader who painted boys’ bodies before sexually abusing them has been jailed for five years and two months.

Aaron Blake, 69, took photographs of the boys on a Polaroid camera and kept them for more than 30 years, Preston Crown Court heard.

One of Blake’s victims was so distressed by what had happened he refused to let his own child join the scouting movement. Another came forward after seeing an episode of Hollyoaks, the court heard.

Blake, of Crofts Close, Kirkham, has previous convictions for indecent assault and making indecent images. He was arrested in December 2018 after he told someone he wanted to play Father Christmas in local schools.

One of his victims had reported the abuse a month earlier, but as a result of his arrest two more victims were identified.

A paedophile pensioner who raped a little girl dozens of times in her childhood has been jailed for his historic crimes.

And for terminally ill 78-year-old James Knowles, the prison sentence of 25 years means he was told he will probably die behind bars. Knowles carried out ‘depraved sexual acts’ on the ‘extremely young’ girl several decades ago, Liverpool Crown Court heard today (July 26).

The victim went to police in the 1990s but she said she was told nothing could be done “because it happened years ago”. But she returned to officers in 2018 – which has today led to her abuser being jailed for a quarter of a century.

Judge David Aubrey, QC, told Knowles “your evil past has now caught up with you”, with him now “likely to die in prison”, the ECHO reports.
